The Cone is an attempt to capture the spatial qualities from a passage from Ralph Ellison's 'Invisible Man'. The protagonist describes sitting in a small dark room with eight gramaphones playing Louis Armstrong's 'What Did I Do To Be So Black and Blue?' simultaneously while eating ice cream. He talks of sensual over stimulation in order to make himself feel alive.
We abstracted the qualities of sensual overloading and claustrophobia into a black timber box that houses an oversized red PVC gramophone speaker, which plays 'What Did I Do...?' at one fortieth of the original pace, to create an environment that is aurally, and visually stimulating, intensifying the presence of the cone and the tightness of space.
The installation was exhibited in Nottingham Town Centre, November 2007. The public were invited to enter and experience the space.
